• Dear Readers,

There are multiple moments I could tie to the genesis of this first issue to. However, the driving force behind the creation of Objects & Their Subjects is everything that occurred when I stopped wearing a wire bra at twenty-one.

The decision to separate myself from an object that was causing me injury was disturbing to my peers. Believing me to be subversive for rebellion's sake, rather than participating in an active distancing from something that was eliciting physical harm and mental duress. All situated around a metal contraption that directly linked me to an identity that I did not desire for myself.

Objects & their Subjects is a concept that persisted throughout my undergraduate studies, writing about women and their artistic processes. Women who were paving the way for new canons of art in the realm of the masculine, while directly engaging with the material/immaterial systems and structures that make up who we are and why.

This publication will be a small book that follows the history of one object per issue. The spring/summer issue will be about ~the bra~ This and future issues are curated with the intent provide a space for discourse and contemplation on how certain objects intersect and interact with our lives.

All the best,

Cat Strain
